Prof. Dr. Dejan Bokonjić, a specialist in pediatrics and subspecialist in pediatric pulmonology, is a full professor of “Pediatrics” at the Faculty of Medicine, University of East Sarajevo. He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine in Belgrade with high honors in 1997. He earned his Master of Science degree in 2003 by defending his master’s thesis titled “The Impact of Leukotriene Inhibitors on Bronchial Hyperreactivity in Asthmatic Children.” He spent 18 months working on his doctoral thesis at the Faculty of Medicine in Heidelberg (Germany) and the Military Medical Academy in Belgrade, as a DAAD scholarship holder.

He defended his doctoral dissertation titled “Expression and Function of Toll-like Receptors on Human Peripheral Blood Granulocytes” in August 2008 at the Faculty of Medicine in Foča.

In February 2009, he was appointed as an assistant professor of Pediatrics at the Faculty of Medicine, University of East Sarajevo. In April 2014, he was promoted to associate professor, and in 2019 to full professor of “Pediatrics” at the Faculty of Medicine, University of East Sarajevo. As a pediatric specialist, he has been employed at the Pediatrics Department of the Clinical Center of East Sarajevo, Foča Hospital and Clinical Services, today University Hospital Foča, since January 2007. He completed his subspecialization in pulmonology in October 2012. From 2012 to 2019, he served as the Vice-Rector for International Cooperation and Quality Assurance at the University of East Sarajevo. Prof. Bokonjić’s research areas include allergic inflammation, fungal infections, pediatric pulmonology with a focus on asthma and cystic fibrosis.

He is the author and co-author of more than 80 papers published in international journals and conferences, and several chapters in 14 books on physiology, pediatrics, and quality assurance in higher education. He is the author and coordinator of ten European projects focused on higher education reform and quality assurance. He has also been involved in numerous national and international research projects. Prof. Bokonjić was a member of the Commission for International Cooperation of the Chamber of Doctors of the Republic of Srpska from 2008 to 2015. He was the representative of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Health Program Committee of the European Commission from 2011-2013 and 2014-2018. He has been a member of the Science Council of the Republic of Srpska from 2012 to 2016 and from 2016 to the present.

He received the award for scientific research from the Chamber of Doctors of the Republic of Srpska in 2012. In 2017, he was named an Ambassador of the University of East Sarajevo. He is also the recipient of plaques from the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Theology.
